I have noticed a depressing trend in women's Halloween costumes lately. It seems the sluttier and more ridiculous the costume is, the more popular it is. I used to love going to the Halloween store every year to get some great gothic accessories or long gothic dresses. But within the last 5 years or so, all the long gothic dresses have been replaced with useless sexy versions of my favourite costumes. The brides have short skirts, the gothic dresses have tutus, and even the zombies are sexy now. And the quality has really gone down hill on the dresses. They look terrible. The worst part is the little girl's costumes are sexy versions too! I feel bad for parents with preteen girls. There is nothing that is appropriate for that age group.
The costumes I bought 15 years ago still look great. I can still wear them. This year I looked for something new to wear for Halloween and left disappointed and empty handed. It's not like I don't have a million costumes to pull together out of my closet, but I still enjoy shopping for a new one every year. I think the last time I bought a costume from a store was about 5 years ago now.
I wish now I had taken some pictures of the offending costumes at the store. But I didn't, so I have pulled a few pictures together from Pinterest for some examples of what I'm talking about...
The sexy Freddy Krueger:
The sexy Ghostbusters:
The sexy Lumberjack:
The sexy Pirate:
The sexy Ghost:
The sexy Dorothy?
Even poor Glinda the Good Witch didn't escape her dress being shortened:
And my favourite- The sexy Wednesday Addams:
So when did Halloween turn slutty? And is anyone else annoyed at the terrible selection at the stores now? What do you think?
I agree with you! I'm in Australia, so Halloween costumes aren't a big thing here, but I see all the trashy ones online. I think Wednesday would be horrified at the way they have skankified her image. ;)
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree, the trend is the same here in the uk. I'm sorry but that sexy ghost costume is truly ridiculous! I did have a little chuckle.
ReplyDeleteTo true you are. I think that in an effort to shrink the output of materials they were paying for in manufacture, therefor raising profit, they did two things. Sex sells and less is more - money for us.
ReplyDeleteAnd since there is a side of society that likes to finally let their sexy side out for one night a year, buying these pieces of junk more for the bedroom than the Halloween party, they do sell and we are left with cheap garbage for sale as costumes.
I'm glad that I am not the only one to note this turn of events. But this has happened before. Tides turn.
Sad as it is. They are in it for the money and once the consumers are not buying into it any longer we are left high and dry.
I have also left the costume store empty handed. Okay I did buy a packet of spiders. But to the point, I did not buy a costume.
I'm glad to hear you ladies feel the same way about the state of Halloween costumes. I'm not the only one that feels this way! Oh well, at least us crafty girls can make our own costumes. :)
ReplyDeleteYes I agree! I am glad to hear I am not the only one!
ReplyDeleteMy 13 year old asked me to make her a costume because she couldn't find anything that wasn't "slutty" looking. I was proud and sad for her... Halloween has gotten ridiculous for females. That sexy Chucky costume cracked me up though!! Seriously?!? lmao
ReplyDeleteShe has good taste. And she will get a much nicer costume made by you!
DeleteI would take Glinda and just sew a new skirt on. It bugs the hell out of me how oversexualized Halloween costumes have become. I get it, there are a lot of brain dead young women who will wear these costumes in hopes to get a date because otherwise they're completely lacking in personality and self confidence. But what about the rest of us who aren't interested in looking like a whore? Those of us who've already bagged a man?! That's why I just sew my own costumes now.
ReplyDeleteHahh, I'm so glad to read, that I'm not the only one, who's fed up with the oversexualized, slutty Halloween costumes; and frankly, the women wearing them...I mean, these costumes have absolutely nothing to with Halloween. The girls that wear them couldn't care less about the occasion, they just wanna drink and hook up with someone...I don't want to generalize though, it's just my experience...:/
